Q: Surface Pro 4 - Typecover not working
My girlfriend's Surface Pro 4's type cover suddenly didn't work this morning when she turned it on. It worked last night and it was on a table at home, so nobody touched it in between.
So, what we've tried to fix it:
-Switch my keyboard with hers (her keyboard works on my computer, but the one connected to her computer doesn't work)
-Download all updates
-Roll back (didn't work, so we got the latest updates again...)
-Press Power button + Volume Up for 15-30s (started in what I assume to be UEFI)
-Restart in Safe Mode (didn't work in Safe Mode either)
Weird behaviour I've noticed:
The light on the Fn Button is not on (pressed it multiple times to check). In and of itself it wouldn't be so weird when the type cover itself isn't working, but in Device Manager, when the type cover is connected, under keyboards, the "Surface Type Cover Filter Device" appears, but when you disconnect it, it also disappears from the Device Manager. To me, this means that the type cover is detected as being connected while not allowing any of its keys to work.
In the meantime, we connected a wireless keyboard to her Surface and it works, so it doesn't seem to be any software that would actively reject any and all keyboard/mouse inputs which makes me feel like it would be more on the type cover's driver-level.
What I have concluded:
-The type cover is not defective
-The issue is with the Surface itself, not the type cover
-Might be 'core' driver-related as it isn't fixed when booting in Safe Mode
-Might be hardware-related... but it's weird that it is detected as connected in Device Manager
I appreciate any advice you have in solving this issue.
Thanks in advance!
P.S. Also, I'd rather not send it in for repair now, as she needs it for 2 presentations next week and her exam period is coming up the week after (and the surface is generally awesome for her to study with due to the combination of keyboard + touch-screen input methods)
